External graphics card vs internal graphics card

External graphics card vs internal graphics card

What’s better an internal or external graphics card?

Sometimes having a desktop is not possible for some people, especially if you are always on the go. For this reason, many people turn to laptops but sometimes laptops are not powerful enough to process high end software’s or video games. The good news is that external graphics cards are available and can be used with your laptop to make it more powerful.

What are external graphics cards?

An external graphics card works just like an internal one but being external it allows you to use it in a laptop or an ultra-small form factor computer. For the most part, all you need to run your graphics card externally is a graphics card dock that will later connect to your computer via thunderbolt or USB-C.

Disadvantages:

Once drivers and all necessary software has been installed, the PC will start redirecting the graphics to the external GPU instead of the one installed. However, this has its disadvantages; An external graphics card will not give you the same performance as if it was installed inside your equipment, you will lose up to 15% performance compared to the internal ones. The reason why this happens is because you are not connected directly to the motherboard.

Overall, we think an external graphics card is a great option for those who have computers that don’t support an internal one. Taking into consideration the lost in performance an external graphics card will still be faster than what your computer comes with by default.
