The future is near: 80 TBytes hard drives

The need to store information is the mother of all inventions in storage schemes.

Showa Denko Corporation, the largest Japanese hard disks and magnetic storage company says it can create a hard drive with a capacity of 80 Terabytes.

In February 2019 and again, in this year 2020, the company has made interesting announcements, allowing the end of storage problems.

In 2019, the company said it would start with a new 3.5-inch hard drive, which would work with MAMR microwave-assisted magnetic recording) technology, which is already the tenth generation of conventional recording.

This product was adopted by Toshiba for use on its MAMR hard drives with 18 TB of storage.

Showa Denko says that its hardware has a capacity of 2TB for each aluminum substrate. The company said it works in storage via HAMR (heat-assisted magnetic recording).

Now, this year 2020, on February 6, Showa Denko said he was already developing products with HAMR technology, indicating that he is working on a new structure of magnetic layers and new ways to control the temperature during the production of his hard drives.

With this new technology, magnetic coercivity is guaranteed many times greater than what exists today in conventional hard drives. Note that this HAMR technology is very different from conventional hard drives and are based on steel, rather than cobalt.

Showa Denko says that the hard disk storage media, in terms of data density, is at 1.14 Tb per square inch, taking into account conventional recording technology, Using HAMR, the density is 5 to 6 Tb per square inch.

If the same number of discs are used as those in the company's 3.5-inch drive (8 to 9), hard disk capacities of 70 to 80 TBytes could be achieved.

For its part, the Seagate company has already announced that it will have 20 TB HAMR discs for the second quarter of 2020.

Western Digital works in perpendicular recording energy-assisted perpendicular magnetic recording (ePMR), for hard drives of 18 and 20 TB. The company has indicated that it will use MAMR and HAMR for its high capacity hard drives.

Given these statements, we know that storage in large quantities will be more common than we imagine.
