From consumers to users - The advantages of the circular economy

From consumers to users - The advantages of the circular economy

The circular economy poses a new model of production and consumption. This implies a profound change in the habits of people, who go from being buyers of products to users of services.

Circular economy is a strategy that aims to reduce both the entry of virgin materials and the production of waste, closing the loops or economic and ecological flows of resources.

The analysis of the physical flows of resources comes from the school of thought of industrial ecology in which the material flows are of two types, biological nutrients, designed to reintroduce into the biosphere without technical incidents, nutrients which are designed to circulate with High quality in the production system but do not return to the biosphere.

The value of products and components remains as long as possible within the economy creating value. This model involves job creation, promotes innovations that provide competitive advantages and provide protection to people and the environment.

  • It improves security in the supply of raw materials and reduces dependence on imports. The maintenance of the value of the products over time or the return of the waste to the economy as high quality secondary materials, will reduce the demand for virgin raw materials and, as a consequence, the dependence on imports.
  • Improvement of the environmental impact. Reducing the extraction of raw materials, reducing the consumption of fossil fuels, extending the life of products, recovering and recycling materials, etc., will cause the environmental impacts that occur at all stages of the life of a product to decrease.
  • Innovation and economic growth. New business models and new technologies will favor innovation and create more economic value of natural resources.
  • Sustainable consumption and opportunity for new jobs. Social innovation associated with "sharing", ecodesign, reuse, recycling, etc. It will result in more sustainable consumption behavior. On the other hand, the development of new work areas will generate job creation of both low, medium or high qualification. The exchange of products for services and training and education will also lead to new jobs.
  • Unlike other economic models where the economic aspect prevails over the social or environmental one, the circular economy represents a substantial common improvement for both companies and consumers.

The companies that have implemented this system are verifying that reusing resources is much more profitable than creating them from scratch.

As a consequence, production prices are reduced, so that the sale price is also reduced, thus benefiting the consumer; not only economically, but also in the social and environmental aspects.
