The dilemma that exists between the use of Free Technologies or Private Technologies has become a struggle of experts based on Computer Security.
In this fight both sides have their well-defined and argued views on choosing what kind of Technologies we should privilege in our daily lives, both in personal and work use.
Many commercial firms which have supported the Private Technologies sector give these technologies a predominance over the Free ones, but... What is better?
What are Free Technologies and Private Technologies?
The Private Software
It is the Software that an owner has and for which it has to be paid, as well as how it is paid for the hardware. And therefore, it has user licenses with explicit restrictions and limitations.
Free Software
It is the software that respects the freedom of users and the community, this means that users have the freedom to execute, copy, distribute, study, modify and improve the software. That is, free software is a matter of freedom, not price.
Private Technologies
Are those protected or closed to third parties through licenses for use and commercialization and patent rights. Its users obtain good results in the ethical operation of the same by the manufacturer.
Free Technologies
These arise as an extension of the concept and philosophy of free software applied to technologies, that is, respect for the user's or consumer's freedom. They are those that have open standards that guarantee access to all the source code and groups together the set of technical and scientific knowledge that allow the development of goods and services that meet human needs and facilitate their balanced adaptation to the environment.
The Free knowledge
It is that knowledge that can be learned, interpreted, applied, taught and shared freely and without restrictions, and can be used for problem solving or as a starting point for the generation of new knowledge.
Differences between the Technologies
Private technologies being a closed system is safer if nobody has access to the inside of their source code, design, training and other important elements.
Speaking of Computer Security, Private Technologies have a long history of violations of privacy, use of monopolies and commercial or government espionage, this without counting on the negative experiences of users, regarding the misuse of personal data.
Free Technology, meanwhile, offers the benefit of not relying on a single technology provider, being able to carry out, transparent and collaborative audits and tests on the same technology, facilitating the processes of adaptation, integration and maintenance.
Free technologies, being essentially collaborative and open, are not prone to manipulation of personal data and at the user level, the massification grows and is on track, despite the little public dissemination they have.
