How GreenTek Helped A Fortune 50 Retailer Streamline ITAD Across 1,150+ Locations

The bigger a business is, the more complex their ITAD needs tend. Coordinating operations across hundreds of locations and team members is a monumental task and, for most companies, previous ITAD projects involved dozens of vendors, requiring extra effort to receive reporting and payment. The disjointed process always creates frustration, confusion and delays.

And, especially for large businesses, they have a reputation and values to protect. They need to ensure their vendor partners have the expertise in proper handling of sensitive customer data and potentially hazardous e- waste. For a project of this magnitude, there can be considerable risk involved, especially across so many vendor teams.

So, when a large company needs to efficiently handle thousands of assets across the entire United States with ongoing pickups, it takes an experienced ITAD team to get it done right.

Finding a Nationwide Partner

When a Fortune 50 Retailer approached GreenTek, their CTO was frustrated by experiences from previous ITAD projects. They chased vendors for payment, tried to organize scattered reporting and discovered that disconnected vendors often led to disastrous delays and mistakes.

This time around, as they sought to upgrade their computers and point of sale systems nationwide, they knew they needed an all-in-one R2v3-certified ITAD partner who could not only handle a complex, nationwide ITAD process but provide the client experience they expected with the reporting they required. With GreenTek up to the task for a complex, nationwide project, the ITAD process began.

An ITAD Strategy Comes Together

Having led large scale ITAD processes across nationwide locations before, GreenTek came ready with a strategy that made the process simpler, faster and, for the client, profitable. Transferring 20,000+ assets from 1,150+ locations to 15 centralized locations with the retailer’s trucks allowed GreenTek to pay the client for the equipment instead of charging them for logistics and transport.

In tandem, GreenTek solved the poor reporting and transparency of previous ITAD vendors. Utilizing GreenTek’s proprietary dashboard and software, ITAD ERP, the client’s stakeholders had direct, real-time access to a centralized system that monitored the progress of the entire project, including reports related to weight, certificates of recycling, inventory, revenue share and more.

Executing a Nationwide ITAD Process

As the ITAD process was underway, the client noticed a massive difference in their experience. Having a single point of contact at GreenTek—and a client representative at each of the 15 locations, suggested by GreenTek—there was clear accountability and quick communication.

While thousands of assets rolled into the centralized locations, GreenTek team members were busy working to maximize the sale price of these assets, an opportunity for the client to not only avoid the cost of the ITAD process, but actually generate revenue from their old equipment. As the team sourced buyers and researched the market, the first assets began to reach GreenTek HQ where they were inventoried, added to the ERP, wiped of data, physically cleaned and placed in storage.

As this large retailer had millions of sensitive customer records stored in these assets, GreenTek followed R2v3 and data handling best practices. As team members sorted through data-containing equipment, these items were immediately locked inside secure cages, accessible only through highly limited permissions. As these items reached the testing and wiping phase, any that could not be fully erased were sent to a shredder, physically destroying any potential data left on the system.

Any items deemed to be e-waste were safely and legally recycled or disposed of, preventing environmental damage or risk. In fact, this process yielded significant environmental benefits; of the 114,000 pounds of assets properly recycled, this effectively reduced greenhouse emissions by 158,764 pounds, equivalent to removing 16 cars from the road.

Finally, after 8 months, all computer and point of sale assets had been inventoried, wiped, cleaned and were ready for sale across eBay and wholesale, generating significant revenue for the client.

An ITAD Success Story

What had appeared to be a challenging ITAD project for the client turned out to be a smooth, revenue- generating game changer. It transformed how the company perceived ITAD. At every step, the client had direct access to data and a single, friendly point of contact. This cohesive strategy and processed approach allowed the client to consolidate # assets across hundreds of locations in just (TIMELINE).

After completing the ITAD process, the client and GreenTek continue their collaboration with bi-weekly pickups of 1,500 assets, generating ongoing revenue and benefits through a long-term relationship.
